Instead of taking National Highway 318, I took a pleasant alternative route to Kangding Airport. I rested by the roadside and watched the sun rise. Plenty of mani trees lined the roadside, and a few horses grazed nearby. I quickly snapped a few photos, which, combined with the distant valley, created a beautiful layered effect. Even after reaching 4,000 meters, I felt dizzy despite the stunning scenery. The horses basking in the sun were a delight to watch.

Yesterday on the way back to Kangding, I had planned to photograph the valley, but I didn’t get a chance. I went down this morning to take a good look. A 4,000-meter climb, the roadside descended into a valley. Panting, I carried my equipment back and forth, searching for several angles, choosing and changing them again and again. Looking back at the backlight, I found the image I wanted, but I couldn’t decide whether to put the flowers on the left or the right.

There are so many shops, selling so many things, worried that passersby might go hungry or thirsty.

After crossing Xindu Bridge, Jiagen Pass is now the hub for pass traffic. The road to Yaha Pass, which I visited a few years ago, hasn’t been completed in years. The detour was too tiring, so I decided to go to a newly opened spot.

Yaha

When I went to Yaha in 2019, there were no crowds crowding to see Mount Gongga, and there were few SUVs. I shot at 4,500 meters until 7 p.m. I was short of oxygen, but I didn’t feel bad. Now, even with the lack of oxygen, I still feel bad seeing the crowds and traffic jams.

Back then, the sun didn’t even begin to set until 6:30 p.m. I used my Sony telephoto lens to focus on the snow-capped mountains, waiting until the road was open before heading out.

We reached the summit, at 4,500 meters. The planning was excellent, and the guide parked the car. We didn’t have much time left, so we pulled out our Hasselblad and all our lenses. It was already nearly dark. This might be the best shot I’ve taken this trip. The old Kodak film smelled just like something I’d taken 30 years ago. Darkness had us heading back down. The road was long. We’ll come back next time.

Desert

Grabbed an opportunity, I made a quick trip to Turpan, staying at the same winery, enjoyed same grilled lamb chops and grilled beef skewers.
Dozens of kilometers of gravel roads in the desert finally revealed the limits of shock absorbers. I thought the Red River Valley was just a rocky beach, hoping to see the crimson world at its edge.
But, braving the scorching sun at over 40 degrees Celsius, I reached the cliff edge and discovered a lush green valley. No wonder Tang Sanzang was able to traverse the desert to obtain Buddhist scriptures.

It’s rare to get a moment in the photo myself. In just an hour or so, the Arc’teryx and I were sunburned like boiled shrimp.
The mountains on the left are the Tianshan Mountains. The clean, clear stream must be melted snow, a marvel of nature. In the scorching desert heat, I gazed at the snowcapped mountains in the distance and the pure water flowing beneath my feet, nourishing the greenery.

The strange Stone Forest, a place not often visited. The ticket counter made sure we had enough water. Between the half-price ticket and the free ticket, I shouldered my 15kg backpack and turned through the gate. Seeing the 60-degree (C) steep (and shaky) stairs, my heart sank, even though the sun was scorching.

From the summit, the view was vast, and the heat melted away. My clothes were soaked, but the cool breeze at 1,200 meters was refreshing. I even used my Hasselblad after carrying it up. After hundreds of years, these strange rocks shouldn’t be strange anymore.

The entrance to Flaming Mountain was now more heavily guarded. So many tourists parked their cars that the parking lot expanded to the opposite side, but at the entrance stood a thermometer pointing to 76 degrees and a rather fake palm-leaf fan. The scenic area collects fees, and tourists check in, each taking what they need, a sign of peace and tranquility. Turning back up the mountain to the Thousand Buddha Caves, everything became quiet. Monkey King Sun stood in the sun, with the silent sand dunes behind him and the blue sky as a backdrop—a truly beautiful sight.

Delete to space
df<space>
——>
Change case ——>
Find
/ty
——>
Continuously change the letters
R
name ——>
Repeat action
n.
——>
Copy inside the single quotes
yi'
——>

Find
fo
in line——>
Select the word
viw
and paste
cmd+v
——>
Continue looking for
;
——>

So I immediately turned on the computer, and the result was as expected, was completely defeated by
hjkl
, and that was the next time until I opened vim is after two years.

I briefly tried neovim and lazyvim, but couldn’t stick with them because modern IDEs are too powerful.
I mainly use Pycharm for work, memorizing the commonly used hot keys was enough.
Even if sometimes the server side needs working in terminal, it was acceptable by configure nano with the mouse setting(Note 1) so that it can scroll and click. If further use VSCode <a class="link" href="https://code.visualstudio.com/docs/remote/ssh" target="_blank" rel="noopener"

2024, Sandwiched between Win & Mac

One day, my surface pro turned into a brick during an update, so I bought my first MacBook. It was my first time configuring the environment on Mac, and the experience was very smooth. I used the cmd key to copy, paste, etc., and I got used to it right away.

But a new problem arises. I use Windows for work and Mac for personal use. If I want to write code fluently on both sides, I have to be familiar with at least three environments: Mac VSCode + Win VSCode + Win Pycharm (for Dataframe work), and nano too.
Whenever I switch between Windows and Mac, I always have trouble with the keys, which is a headache, so I made up my mind and opened vim again.

Note 2: Another way is to change the IDE settings, but pycharm default is too complete and there are too many conflicts

Self-analysis, two major reasons for past failures

My right hand is rusty. Before switching, when I drew in AutoCAD, I typed cmd with my left hand and clicked the mouse with my right hand, and I often typed with one hand, so when my right hand returned to the keyboard, my ring finger and little finger were in a disabled state. Bad habits, such as pressing L with my middle finger, make my vim operation very awkward.

Lack of vim jump concept. In the past, I just wanted to do it brute force
hjkl
(X). In fact, I didn’t give up a few times and still tried to get used to moving by playing vim snake. I thought that as long as I practiced up, down, left and right, I would have the door to the new world. How naive!

Ways to reduce vim’s learning curve

— What works for me may not work for you, be sure to find a way that works for you! —

Method 1. Remap ESC <—> Cap Lock

Must-See-Remap-ESC

The reason is, vim often uses
esc
, so I have to 1. move my palm up > 2. find
esc
with pinky finger > 3. bring hand back > 4. bring my pinky finger back to A, which is very tiring and hands get sore after a day of use.
After remapping [Note 3], it is natural to press the cap with the little finger of the left hand, avoiding wastes.

Another reason is that if Vim misses a key in the middle of continuous operation, you need to press
u
several times to restore it to its original state.
I don’t feel safe enough when typing blindly, so I set up a dummy-proof mechanism for myself – increasing the frequency of pressing ESC. After remap, the little finger can easily press esc to reset the operation. Press
esc
more and
u
less, prevention is better than cure. To some extent, it’s like pressing the shortcut key to find idle villagers in Age of Empires to ensure there are no redundants (OCD?)

By the way, a tip I found: before I start typing each word, I pause for a moment to think about how to move my fingers, and then start moving my fingers to force myself to finish typing in an instant. At first I pressed the wrong order like crazy, but the key is to modify the muscle memory.

For example, in <a class="link" href="https://vim-adventures.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"

The most effective learning order for me is to avoid hjkl, learn to jump around first, and be able to quickly browse the code.
Then, while jumping around, I familiarize myself with the detailed movements of hjkl.

Conclusion, Benefits

For me, besides being able to easily switch IDEs, there are two main advantages:

Editing efficiency is improved, editing long markdown articles is particularly obvious

Relax eyes

What does it have to do with the eyes?
When using the mouse or arrow keys to select or move, you must keep your eyes on the cursor to make sure it moves to the desired location.
Vim is essentially a program. When you press
/X
, as long as X exists, it will 100% move to the next X, without error.
So your eyes have more chances to be free and you just need to think about what action to take after the cursor moves to the next position.

Nowadays, no matter whether you are using IDE or AI to generate code, the Tab completion is getting stronger and stronger. Maybe one day we will only need to write code with mouth and don’t have to worry about keyboard hotkeys. Btw, I don’t think developers must learn vim. First think about whether your “needs” must use vim. Usually IDE is enough.

In any case, I am very happy to find a balance between Windows and Mac, and to commemorate the milestone of passing the learning curve of Vim.

Share an APScheduler's example and the issue caused by child processes

AI is becoming more and more popular, and Python automation is more accessible than ever.
When you need to perform tasks regularly, such as data backup or crawling API data, for such needs,
it’s recommended to use Python’s powerful scheduling framework:
APScheduler。

Case: Client Countdown Program

At work, there is a Python App running on the client side, which polls our backend
to get the latest task settings and saves them locally.
After that, it relys on APScheduler to execute offline tasks regularly.
When the task is completed, the results are packaged and uploaded back to our backend.

The advantage of this design is that the backend is clean and simple,
and the logic of processing timing is concentrated on the client side.
The disadvantage is that once a problem occurs, you can only rely on the
offline log provided by the customer to debug, and often cannot obtain detailed information.

Issue

I recently encountered a strange problem:
the App suddenly stopped accessing the backend and stopped uploading the results files.
The log shows that the offline tasks are still being executed stably
and the results are continuously packaged. It seems that the scheduler is also functional.
This problem has occurred on several clients.
Once this happens, the only way to restore to normal is to restart the App.

I initially thought it was a connection issue with the backend,
but after reading the issue log, I was blanky.
The main program is supposed to keep trying, but sometimes it will never try to connect to the backend again after a normal connection (like it disappeared after a date?).

What goes wrong？

When the system crashes and the main process does not manage child processes/threads correctly, the child processes will remain, causing unpredictable behavior.

Basically, the main program crashes, the subjobs abort.
When you execute a Python script, the Python interpreter starts a main process to run the code, and all threads are created and managed by the main process.

The APScheduler scheduler is also managed by the main process.
When the main program crashes, the scheduler stops running, and all sub-jobs should be forced to terminate.
It just so happens that in my case, the subtask lasts for N hours, so that new logs continue to be generated after the main program crashes.

Note: If you use multiprocessing (the multiprocessing module),
the main process will spawn child processes to perform work.
Each subprocess has its own memory space and Python interpreter,
and is not restricted by the GIL. But it is still better to set it up so that
the main process manages these sub-processes, which will be mentioned later.

Experiment

To reproduce the error, I simulate a small task and try to exit the main program before the child process/thread ends.

Conclusion, besides handling errors, what’s other remedies?

After I solved a small bug that caused the main program to crash, the problem is solved.

But think further, is there any good solution?
The following are some common ways to better support main program crashes:

Set up a cron job or use systemd monitoring (Linux) to restart the main program once it crashes.

Use Celery or Redis Queue (RQ) to completely separate the job from the main program’s scheduling.
APScheduler is only responsible for scheduling, and execution is handed over to independent job managers or workers.
Its additional benefit is that it supports persistence, and unfinished jobs can continue to execute after the main program is restarted.

In fact, our backend which deals the upload file is using RQ. Maybe write about it in the future.

I don’t remember how long it has been since I last visited Hong Kong. I learned how to take the subway and transfer to the hotel. I didn’t have any plan. All the tourists came to Hong Kong for Christmas, and the crowds were like ants stretching across the airport.
Feeling the strong Christmas atmosphere, students at the seaside in Tsim Sha Tsui were all ready for a performance, after all, it is a tradition left by the British.
Talking about the surface of things may obscure many details, but behind the details is the beginning of beauty.
With the help of oblique light, I created enough contrast. It turns out that the outstanding beauty requires the silent darkness behind.

Flew thousands of kilometers in a plane packed with people. Why did everyone go north anyways? The airport was still full of people. The snow piles were really crowded this winter. It was already night when we arrived in Mohe, minus 24 degree C. The ground is covered with snow. Northeastern cuisine, Northeastern wine, it’s warmth in the north.

On the second day, we headed north. It was a sunny day, the temperature was still low, there was no snow on the driveway, but there was a lot of snow on both sides.

The cave is warm in winter and cool in summer with a dry climate. It has remained intact since 600 AD. It was only damaged by explorers from the Western world who took the precious cultural relics back with them.

Siguniang Mountain is very beautiful, but I have never been there.
I wonder if I should go there during the long holiday at the end of December.
I booked a homestay in Changpinggou and left after confirming it.
It was still cold in the evening. It snowed and fogged. At almost 4,000 meters, I still felt a lack of oxygen.
Clouds come and go, beautiful, snow on the mountain road anyway, just arrive at night

It was still hard to sleep on the first night, the temperature outside the window was minus 8 degC, and after a tough night, we set off for Shuangqiaogou late in the morning.
A 60-year-old man bought a half-price ticket and followed everyone else. The bus was clean and quiet, so he decided to reload and climb to 3,900 meters.

Hasselblad lens, Kodak 120 film to take photos of clouds and snow on Siguniang Mountain. The weight was really a problem. It was tiring but worth it.
After returning to Taiwan, I developed the film and scanned it into digital files. It looks really different, with a slightly retro yellow tint, making me feel like I’ve returned to the negative film era of 1990.

We told the tour guide that we would not go to the scenic spots, but only to places where there were no people. As we walked, we ended up on the road to the sea.
It can only be said that it’s a very simple island. The kind of smile that only people in southern Fujian can see is on everyone’s face.
Slapping the rocks, white, I haven’t seen it for a long time. I feel like I’m home.

Note1: Laojun Cave is located on Laojun Mountain. It was first built in the Tang Dynasty and rebuilt into Taiji Palace in the Ming Dynasty (1480 AD). The Taoist temple was built against the mountain. The statues were carved into the mountain wall. The structure of the temple forms the shape of the Chinese character “玄” which spirals upwards, blending in with the deep and tranquil natural scenery.

The red candles are still lit, and worshippers come and go. It is a good thing that there is quite. I also lit the incense, and I liked the way the smoke floated through the Zeiss lens, savoring the difference.
